At an earlier visit to Uganda we met Dirisa Kasalirwe who had built a school in the slum area for 120 children. We visited the school which was built of planks and was in a miserable condition. The children in the school wanted pen friends and we arranged contact with children from Sågtorps School in Nacka. The children had exchanged letters during four years when Dirisa asked us for help with the school which now was rotten and close to break down.
We had at an earlier project, which now was finished, collected money which was earmarked for orphans in Uganda. We made a lot of research for being sure that we would manage to build a new school. We met a building engineer who was willing to join us as an expert of the building. In October 2010 we, three committed women, started our trip to Kasubi together with the building engineer.
As the buildings in the old school were rotten and damaged by water we decided to tear everything down and build a completely new school.
We also learned that if the children from the slum would be able to join school we had to arrange a nursery school for their younger brothers and sisters. The children had to take care of them when the mothers – often single parents – had to go to the market for being able to support their children.
We had a cooperation with Sågtorp School, but started now also a cooperation with Myrsjö School where many students from Sågtorp had moved. During our stay in Uganda we were presented with the money received from their first Operation Daywork, SEK 80 000. This money made it possible for us to start the building of the nursery school – a school with tree class rooms.
